I was born and raised in the Bronx, the first generation daughter of parents from Ghana and Nigeria.
Shea butter and black soap were always in our home. Sitting on bathroom shelves, tucked into cabinets, passed around without much thought. Back then I did not fully appreciate what I had. To me they were just things my parents used — ordinary, unremarkable, and were distinctly " African."
It took becoming a mom — and dry skin that nothing seemed to fix — for me to find my way back to them. It allowed me to create moments for myself that helped me feel like me, again.
As a nurse practitioner I knew what my skin needed. I understood ingredients, I understood barrier repair, I understood what nourishes versus what simply sits on top and does nothing. But every product I picked up either had ingredients I did not trust or smelled like something I did not want on my body. Clean and luxurious felt impossible to find together.
So I made it myself.
Soapy Girl is more than body care.
It’s a reminder that even in the busiest seasons, you deserve softness, care, and a moment that is yours. 🩷
